Make a Living – Craft a Life

The Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding (NWSWB), located in Port Hadlock, WA, is an educational institution accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Colleges and Schools (ACCSC), and attracts students from around the world. We are committed to providing students a quality education and strive to impart sound, practical knowledge in maritime skills and foster the next generation of problem solvers and skilled craftspeople. Our mission is to teach and preserve boatbuilding and marine systems skills while developing the individual as a craftsperson.

Founded in 1981, the school has taught traditional and contemporary wooden boatbuilding skills to more than 1,700 students. We offer a full-time 12-month Associate of Occupational Studies (AOS) degree in Boatbuilding, a full-time 9-month diploma program in Marine Systems, and week-long Marine Systems Intensive courses for individuals already in the industry. Our 12-month AOS degree program and 6-9 month diploma program are approved for federal financial aid and veterans benefits for those who qualify.

As a team, our instructors share a devotion to the highest levels of craftsmanship. They are inspiring professionals with years of experience before becoming teachers. This experience helps them support the success of their students in their personal career goals and aspirations.

Settled on eight acres of waterfront property, the school’s Port Hadlock Heritage Campus is located near the heart of more than 100 maritime businesses on Port Townsend Bay. School facilities include 28,000 square feet of covered space including historic and modern buildings.

The school is a private post-secondary vocational school and a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit.

Maupin Marine Survey

291 Cook Ave. Ext.
Port Townsend    WA    98368
(360) 301-1210

Services Offered:

Pre-Purchase Marine Survey

This is the most comprehensive type of marine survey and is recommended when purchasing a used vessel. Overall condition and valuation of the vessel will be examined. This survey covers structural integrity, electrical systems, general propulsion system, fuel system, other machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as out-of-water underbody inspection. However we do not perform engine surveys or sailboat rigging surveys, preferring instead for your protection to refer you to the appropriate experts in those fields if we feel such a survey is warranted.

Marine Insurance Survey

Insurance Surveys are performed so that the insurance company can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. Your insurer is interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a marine survey on boats every four to five years, and they also want verification of the vessel’s fair market value.

Offshore Marine Survey

Your insurance company may require a marine survey to determine if your vessel is properly outfitted and equipped for that offshore passage to California, the South Pacific or beyond.

Marine Appraisal Inspection

Marine appraisal inspections are performed to gather enough information to justify or determine the fair market value of the vessel. This is normally needed for financing, estate settlements, donations and legal cases.
