Today an email showed up in the inboxes of our membership unbeknownst to the PTMTA board. Please DELETE IT.
This scam was rather clever but it had a few red flags:
- The return email was not ours but looked like it could have been. Our Gmail is ptmarinetrade@
- It was not signed by the secretary or board member. (No signature at all)
- while it had our logo, (lifted that rather cleverly), we do not usually include our logo at the beginning of an email.
- The style of the email did not match anything our secretary would have sent out.
- If you clicked on the donation link, it went straight to Paypal and not to a Go Fund Me campaign.
This email likely went to everyone on our contact list and we humbly apologize. We will take precautions to avoid this in the future but sometimes these people are simply too clever.
Further, the PTMTA will never send an email requesting donations for random causes. This experience will make us consider carefully, how we fund raise in the future for our focus projects like the Economic Impact Study and our Lifeboat Fund. We have online donation tabs for those funds and will hold live in-person fundraisers if we need to.
We are sorry if there really is a Sally to be saved but we did not send this.
