Ahoy from the Maritime Washington National Heritage Area! In honor of Women’s History Month, this month’s newsletter highlights a few of our favorite articles from our Women on the Waterfront series—including a famous icon from Washington’s past. Plus, we’re excited to announce a new funding opportunity for you or your favorite maritime organization to share new stories from our saltwater shores! As always, we invite you to get hands-on with maritime heritage this month with the help of a jam-packed events list at the end of the newsletter.

The Last Orca Captures: A 50-Year Legacy – Online Panel
Tuesday, March 31, 7:00 PM, Online

  • This online conversation hosted by HumanitiesWA, explores the legacy of orca captures in Washington waters and their lasting cultural and environmental impacts. The program will feature historians, elders, advocates, and eyewitnesses reflecting on the 50-year anniversary of the final capture.

Grand Reopening of the Jefferson County Museum of Art + History
Saturday – Sunday, April 4 – 5, 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM, Port Townsend

  • Celebrate new exhibits, accessibility upgrades, and fresh programming at this festive opening weekend for the newly reimagined museum.

Steilacoom Historical Museum Summer Opening
Saturday, April 4, Steilacoom

  • The Steilacoom Historical Museum opens for the summer season, inviting visitors to explore maritime exhibits and the historic Orr home. The organization also offers a walking tour and access to the Bair Bistro on weekends.

Annual Easter Sand Dollar Hunt
Saturday, April 4, 10:00 AM, Ocean Shores

  • Families are invited to join this free hunt for more than 300 hand-painted sand dollars hidden around the campus of The Coastal Interpretive Center.

Marine Electrical Systems Intensive
Monday – Friday, April 6 – 10, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily, Port Hadlock

  • Join this week-long intensive course at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding to learn safe practices and core components of marine electrical systems.

Tides of History: Southwest Seattle Historical Society Spring Gala
Friday, April 10, 6:00 – 8:30 PM, Seattle

  • The Southwest Seattle Historical Society hosts their annual celebration at Salty’s on Alki, featuring food, live music, and an auction supporting local history initiatives—including the historical society’s new exhibits!

Northwest Seaport Chantey Sing
Friday, April 10, 7:00 – 9:00 PM, Seattle (exact location TBD, check website for updates)

  • This community sing-along features maritime work songs shared in person and online. Northwest Seaport hosts the monthly gathering and welcomes all to participate.

Gig Harbor BoatShop’s Crew School: Purse Seine Crew Member Training
Monday – Thursday, April 13 – 16, 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM daily, Gig Harbor

  • This training session hosted by the Gig Harbor Boatshop prepares new commercial fishing crew through classroom lessons and on-vessel experience.

Overnight Trips for Teens: Girls at the Helm – Spring Break Experience
Monday – Friday, April 13 – 17, Seattle’s Shilshole Bay Marina

  • Aboard Adventuress, teens learn sailing, navigation, and marine science during an immersive spring-break voyage. Sound Experience hosts this empowering program for female-identifying youth.

Tide Talk: Harris Bay History
Thursday, April 16, 6:30 -7:30 PM, Bellingham

  • The Community Boating Center hosts Kolby LaBree to share stories of early waterfront life in the Fairhaven district and other tales from Bellingham’s maritime past.

A Historical Tour and Circumnavigation of Fidalgo Island
Saturday, April 18, 5:00 PM, Anacortes

  • Island Adventures and the Anacortes Museum team up to host a three-hour boat tour exploring the cultural and maritime history of Fidalgo Island.

Tide to Table Gala
Saturday, April 25, 5:30 PM, Bellingham

  • Enjoy a seafood boil, music, and auction benefitting maritime workforce training at this lively annual fundraiser for the Working Waterfront Coalition of Whatcom County.

Washington State Historical Society Annual History Awards
Saturday, April 25, 5:30 – 8:00 PM, Tacoma

  • Join this awards ceremony and reception honoring outstanding contributions to history education, writing, and preservation across Washington.

Chowder Social
Sunday, April 26, 4:00 – 7:00 PM, Tacoma

  • This fan-favorite annual fundraiser for the Foss Waterway Seaport features chowders, auctions, and stories celebrating Tacoma’s maritime heritage inside the historic Balfour Dock Building.

Blue Tech by the Bay: Marine Career Exploration Event
Tuesday, April 28, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Bellingham

  • High school students explore hands-on activities that highlight marine trades and vessel operations careers. The Port of Bellingham and the Working Waterfront Coalition co-host this career-focused event.
